What is an Sandbox Game ?

A sandbox video game offers the player a significant amount of creativity to tackle challenges, complete objectives, and progress through the game however they wish.

The term sandbox can describe games found in many genres, including strategy, simulator, RPG, but more commonly known within the city-building genre.

City building games, such as Cities: Skylines, SimCity, and Prison Architect, are commonly considered authentic sandbox games due to a lack of restrictions the player has in playing the game.

Another genre in which sandbox-style play seems to be a must is the survival category. Whether fighting off hordes of zombies, aliens, or skeletons, the sandbox play style helps build a world that is non-linear and large in scale, as well as giving the player free choices in where to move, search, camp, and ultimately survive.

With a sandbox game, the player may have an objective, such as earn a profit of $1 million by the end of an in-game year, but how the player chooses to go about reaching that goal is up to them, often with very little guidance other than a time limit.

Some Sandbox games may have no goals or objectives and allow players to explore, craft, or create freely. With these games, the AI plays an important role, as without believable and self-motivated NPCs to interact with, players will not feel a part of that world and quickly become uninterested. Fallout 76 is a very recent example of this happening.

The downside that many consider being with sandbox games is that they can quickly become boring or repetitive due to the lack of the same features outlined above. While players always crave freedom and want the creativity to make a game their own, just like a real-world sandbox, there is only so much a player can create with sand and no tools.

In terms of tools offered, in recent years, community interaction has become sought after by developers to keep players playing their games. The Steam Workshop has helped sandbox games do this with players able to freely create scenarios, videos, storylines, scenes, missions, and maps within their favorite games.

Sandbox games can be found across various genres, giving players an extra level of freedom and creativity but with storylines and objectives to keep the game fun, so unleash your creativity and uncover a story hidden in a virtual sandbox.

This is where Tags come in.

Why Are We Doing a Top 15 Sandbox Games List?

In the world of Sandbox Games, fantastic games can be found at incredible prices but you can also be at a greater risk of being left disappointed.

Not all games reach their potential and get a release, unfortunately many games are left abandoned by their developers or are even released in a poor state and are yet still available to purchase on Steam.

Steam is in the business of selling games and sometimes that can mean a drop in quality in order to get more titles onto the Steam Store and available for purchase.

At CheapDigitalDownload, we believe in quality over quantity and because of that we use every bit of data that Steam offers and we use that to provide the most detailed analysis of a game’s ranking.

How Do We Get Our Rankings?

Our rankings will take all available pieces of data into account, in particular we focus on the real ratings, real opinions and recommendations of those that play the game.

As a part of our ranking, we ensure that only those that own the game, have it currently available in their library and are logged into their account can vote for their favourite games. This, along with our other data, ensures we have the most accurate ranking system possible.

We only show the top 15 games so that you are not overwhelmed with hundreds of games and swamped in too much data. We plan on refreshing our top 15 each week, but we may change this plan if we find it has a real demand from you, our users.

CheapDigitalDownload is a price comparator site with the intention of giving players the best price possible for the best games available. We remain fully impartial on prices and sellers, displaying both online sites and platforms such Steam, Origin and Epic, and we remain completely impartial on the rating of those games that we highlight in our rankings.

Our rankings are based on our users with no influence from us and we will remain impartial on the ratings and the rankings of all games.
