GTA Online design director, Scott Butchard of Rockstar North said in an interview that he did not expect the game mode to reach 10 years.

Butchard said in an interview, “When we started out, I don’t think we could have ever dreamed we’d still be going ten years on. The success of GTA Online is nothing we ever expected.”

Part of the success of the game could be attributed to its free updates. Butchard added that Rockstar is committing to making “sure GTA Online updates are free and accessible to everyone.”

The 10th anniversary of GTA Online will be on October 1.
