During the GDC 2022, Matsuda talked about Forspoken’s use of ray tracing.
Forspoken will be using the Lumina Engine by Luminous Productions. They are known for their work on the engine’s global illumination.
The engine is also capable of the Reverse-Z technique that is able to draw the correct order of distant objects.
Matsuda greatly emphasizes the ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion of Forsaken.
He said that they were able to “create shadows that are sharper, cleaner, and of higher quality than shadows created with shadow maps in the past.”
As you may now be familiar with, ray tracing is only available for the latest generation platforms like the PS5 or perhaps a powerful PC.
What’s great about the PS5 version of the game is that it will have three display modes.
The performance mode is able to run the game at 1440 60 FPS, the graphics mode will have the game running at 4K 30 FPS, and a ray-tracing mode is also available.
Forspoken is set to launch on October 11 of this but there are rumors circulating that the game will be delayed if Square Enix decides to launch a Final Fantasy 16 this year.
