What Is a PS5?
PlayStation 5 / PS5
Synonyms: PlayStation 5 / PS5 / PS5 DE / PS5 SE / PSV / Play Station 5
Sony’s PlayStation 5 or PS5 is Sony’s latest console and can be bought in a PS5 Standard Edition and PS5 Digital Edition.
PlayStation 5 games can be purchased directly through the official PlayStation Store.
Sony released the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition in 2020 at the asking price of $499 and it comes with the following specs:
PlayStation 5 Specs:
- Blu-ray player
- Wifi receiver
- 825 GB of SSD storage
- AMD Ryzen Zen 2 3.5 GHz processor
- 16 GB of GDDR6 SDRAM
- 8k resolution (4320p)
The PS5 Digital Edition has the same specs as the PS5 Standard, with the only difference being that it has no blu-ray player.
What Year Did the PS5 Launch?
Sony started developing the PS5 in 2015 just two years after the PS 4 launched in 2013.
Sony developed and released the PS5 to be a direct competitor to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S consoles and the Nintendo Switch.
The PS5 and its features were officially announced by Mark Cerny in 2019.
Unfortunately, we still had to wait until November 2020 for the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition to officially launch.
Sony released the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition at the same time as the PlayStation 5 Standard Edition, which of course comes without the blu-ray player.
Due to chip shortages, the coronavirus pandemic, and poor stock management, the PS5 was very difficult to find and buy at its official launch price.
Those who did manage to purchase the PlayStation 5 often had to spend over $1,000 to buy it from people who bought the PS5 and resold them for profit.
It was also not that uncommon to find both the PS5 SE and PS5 DE selling on e-commerce sites for more than $700 and $1000.
