About this game

Taking place in the 21st century set during the war between the Yatagarasu and the Phantom Society, two opposing factions of devil summoners, the artificial intelligence Aion has predicted the end of the world and it has a plan to stop it. Soul Hackers 2 is a turn-based JRPG made by Atlus the sequel to “Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers” originally released for the Sega Saturn console, to avert the coming disaster the Artificial intelligence creates and sends out two agents named Ringo and Figue to protect a few Devil Summoners whose deaths will accelerate the foretold end of the world, protect them and revive them, if need be, using the “soul Hack” ability.

• Taking inspirations from the Persona series combat in Soul Hackers 2 emphasizes exploiting the enemy’s weaknesses, stacking those weaknesses will unlock you a special combat technique called “Sabbath” similar to the persona mechanic “All-Out-Attack”.
• A simplified affinity system will make the game less convoluted to play featuring an easy-to-understand affinity chart featuring only Fire, Ice, Electricity, Physical skills, Gunfire, and force.
• Like the other games in the series Soul Hackers, 2 will have a relatively normal RPG progressions system, party members will learn and grow like your standard party increasing their stats as they level up but also letting them able to equip devils and demons which can increase your stats in a burst.
• Customize each of your party member’s COMP using the COMP smith enhancing them with special abilities and effects with the materials you can find whilst adventuring.

Reviews

Soul Hackers 2 feels like a culmination of everything Atlus learned from previous iterations of its games. It’s beginner friendly enough for newcomers to join but also brings just enough challenge to entice veterans of the series. It leaves a unique mark with some genuinely creative mechanics while retaining core elements of Persona and Shin Megami Tensei, but is bogged down by some poor design choices. Painted in a fresh neon coat of cyberpunk and drenched in a deeply wrapped narrative, Soul Hackers 2 still deserves the attention of any JRPG fan.

Soul Hackers 2 takes inspiration from both the Persona and the mainline Shin Megami Tensei series while including new things into the mix to varying degrees of success. As a result, it is best to not compare it to any other title in the franchise.

But Why Tho?

 

Depending on your perspective, Soul Hackers 2 can be seen as a happy medium between dungeon crawler, RPG, and social simulation. Or it can be seen as being in a sort of no man’s land, where it incorporates elements of each while not quite excelling at anything. I come away feeling more toward the latter here, where no singular element of the game really managed to excite me beyond base satisfaction. Soul Hackers 2 is an adequate, experimental Megaten entry with some bright spots, but it doesn’t quite all come together as well as I hoped it would.
