The team from The Ocean Cleanup conducted an aerial expedition in order to get a clearer view of what challenges they would be facing. The team for the expedition consisted of 10 researchers, 3 sensor technicians, and 7 navigational personnel. This was done from September 2016 until October 2016.
On board a C-130 Hercules aircraft called the Ocean Force One, the team was able to count the debris in the ocean by using advanced sensors as well as experienced human observers. The Ocean Force One flew at a speed of 140 knots at an altitude of 400m. Data from the advanced sensors was used to help convert the visual survey into a weight estimate. This was done by using the detected size of the object to get a rough estimate.

The pilot of The Ocean Cleanup was assigned to be deployed anytime this year.
A huge ongoing problem for many years now is Plastic Pollution. It has affected oceans as well as those who live in it and those who make a living from it. Each year millions of seabirds and marine mammals are affected by this problem. Not only does it affect the animals. It also poses a health risk to humans. Industries like tourism, fishing, etc, those that rely on waters to make a living are also affected gravely.
The Organization, The Ocean Cleanup, is based in Delft Netherlands. They aim to “extract, prevent, and intercept plastic pollution by imitating the largest cleanup in history”. The Organization was founded in 2013 by the 19-year-old Boyan Slat. It currently consists of 25 staff and more than 100 volunteers. Right now they are developing V-shaped floating barriers, which is a first ever feasible method of removing plastic garbage from our oceans.
This operation by The Ocean Cleanup targets to launch by 2020. However, the first pilot system will be released this year.
