Universal Passwordless Login Eyed by Tech Giants

Tech giants like Microsoft, Google and Apple are planning to make a universal passwordless login that will be coming soon.

World Password Day was on May 5 and to celebrate, the FIDO Alliance announced that Microsoft, Google and Apple are planning to have a universal sign-in method without having to use passwords. They are planning to launch this soon.

What this means is that users will be able to sign in to any of the major platforms of these companies using a passwordless authentication method. This will be applicable regardless of desktop environments, operating system or browser.

  What does going passwordless mean?  

FIDO Alliance said that using only passwords as a form of authentication is “one of the biggest security problems in the web.” This is because users would have to manage different passwords for different websites or platforms. Users would usually end up using just one password for all of these making them susceptible to data breaches, account takeovers or identity theft.

Passwordless login work by using the smartphone’s PIN, pattern, or biometrics for signing into different services. This will be possible with a “passkey” which is a unique cryptographic token that can be shared between the website that you are accessing and your phone.

   

According to the FIDO Alliance, the tech giants are working together in order to make the passwordless authentication possible by this year or by 2023. Sampath Srinivas, the FIDO Alliance President and Google PM Director for Secure Authentication said through The Verge that:

“When passkey support becomes available across the industry in 2022 and 2023, we’ll finally have the internet platform for a truly passwordless future.”

  Why do we need passwordless authentication?  

The upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference that will be taking place on June 6th up until the 10th would probably shed more details on this.
