About this game

Adol and his long-time companion Dogi make their return in Ys IX: Monstrum Nox an action JRPG, and the 9^th game of the well-established Ys franchise. The series protagonists go to the prison city Balduq but even before they could step inside the city Adol is arrested and imprisoned for questioning about his misadventures in the past, while there he meets a woman named Aprilis who curses him and into Monstrum humans that have supernatural abilities and the ability to exorcise monsters. Explore and find your other Monstrum allies in the city and defend it from monster threats coming from the Grimwald Nox.

• You can play as any other of your 6 Monstrum allies but you limited to 3 members per party. Each Monstrum gets they’re on exploration and traversal abilities called “gifts” The Doll for example gets the “third eye” allowing the player to find invisible enemies, locate objects, and find hidden paths.
• Get to know the giant city of Balduq popularly known as the prison city, accept quests from local townsfolk help them with their problems. Unlock other areas in Balduq by going into the Grimwald Nox and beating certain challenges.
• Flash dodge and flash guard a staple from earlier games will be returning to Ys IX but more new mechanics will be introduced like the previously mentioned “gifts” abilities, you can also go into Boost mode a temporary powerup, that makes everything about you better.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a more than worthy new entry in the series, thanks to its gripping story, great exploration mechanics, solid combat, and a very tight pace that keeps players interested and leaves them hungering for more. The low difficulty level, dated visuals, and a hit-and-miss soundtrack impact the experience slightly but in no way tarnish the quality of the game, which is, everything considered, even slightly better than its excellent predecessor.

While it isn’t perfect, Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is one of the best action RPGs I’ve played in recent years. With fantastic combat, a compelling story and characters, and exploration which is among my favorite in any recent game, after a slow first hour or two, it grabbed me and never let go.
